Restoring dignity to the elderly in Eastern Europe

Loneliness amongst the aged in Eastern Europe is not an isolated occurrence, but a social phenomenon. There are many reasons … society is progressively aging; social care and health systems have collapsed, and with unemployment at record highs across the 6 countries where we work, the numbers of young people leaving to work abroad is constantly on the increase.

The elderly feel neglected and forgotten, and believe they are only remembered by the state when it comes to censuses and elections. It is felt most sharply around holidays like Christmas, Easter, New Year and birthdays. Loneliness can increase the risk of premature death among the elderly, as it weakens their immune system and makes them prone to different diseases. According to data, the number of lonely seniors is globally on the increase worldwide.

Mission Without Borders helps in the following ways:

Soup Kitchens -  for isolated older people who do not have enough money to buy food. The soup kitchen is the only place they can receive a hot meal, either at a community centre or transported to their home if they are bed-ridden.

Recreation clubs - this includes day centre services for individuals with disabilities and older people who have no one to care for them. Services range from employment skills & computer workshops to well-being activities & outings.

Assistance given to Care Homes - The elderly direct their small pensions towards the institution where they reside, but that is often insufficient to cover utilities, nutrition, and medical care or staff salaries. When the monthly income is too low to cover the real needs of the elderly, we support them through gifts of food and hygiene items, counseling sessions, birthday parties, excursions and monthly Christian Input meetings.

Where the government and their families might see the elderly as a burden, we encourage and cherish them!

Only through your support can we reach these people in need and give them a helping hand out of loneliness and despair.
